2017 Mar 31

Jason Vasquez of Bay Shore, N.Y. volunteered for the community as part of SUNY New Paltz's Alternative Spring Break.

Alternative Spring Break gives SUNY New Paltz students an opportunity to participate in leadership activities and to serve on nine different community service projects during their break. This enables them to network with an array of different organizations in the Hudson Valley, and develop vital teamwork and leadership skills.

This year's participants logged a total of 550 hours of leadership and volunteer activities in the community, generating $13,049 in time and other donations. Their community engagement included:

  • A donation drive at Tops in New Paltz on behalf of Chiz's Heart Street in Kingston, N.Y.;
  • Volunteer service at Mohonk Preserve;
  • Work at Safe Harbour of Ulster County;
  • Service at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh;
  • Time and donations to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley; and
  • Volunteering at Phillies Bridge Farm Project.
